New Museum

I had never visited, or even heard of the New Museum, prior to my trip there today. Before I even made my way into the building I was already quite fond of the architecture of the structure as well as the witty rainbow-colored “HELL, YES!” attached to the construction that grabs your attention. I enjoyed Emory Douglas’s “Black Panther” exhibit. The works were extremely political and dealt with injustice and government corruption. His portrayal of mistreated and ignored African Americans, who actively engaged themselves in the fight against the discrimination they faced, in conjunction with depictions of zealous figures such as Malcolm X and Huey P. Newton creates a very powerful and moving presentation and further helps to communicate the theme. Douglas’ use of strong color combinations and complimentary colors allows the works to demand the viewer’s attention as well as their emotional involvement. I also really enjoyed the sky room at the very top of the building. There wasn’t any art displayed there, but there was an amazing view of the city as well as some very ornate paper seats. I thought it was quite a site. Overall I enjoyed my first experience at the New Museum.
